Explore how the woodland changes as trees are cut back and grow again. Seven activities will highlight the differences in habitat at each site so that pupils can consider “What wildlife lives here” and “Why?”

Investigation 2: Seasons at Ranscombe

Pathway through old hornbeams (Carpinus betulus) in autumn in Great Wood, Plantlife Reserve at Ranscombe Farm, Kent.

Investigate seasonal changes in different habitats, looking at texture, colour and how it ‘feels’. Spring brings longer days and increased sunshine: how does this affect the plants and animals? As the days shorten and cool, the leaves change colour and fall: how does this affect the animals in the reserve?

Investigation 3: Roots and Routes through the Countryside

A journey through Ranscombe Farm Reserve is a journey through woodland and farmland but it is also a journey through time. Pupils explore how people have used and travelled through this area over time, how they have affected the landscape, and how land can be managed to benefit wildlife. You can use this activity to develop map skills. You could also consider doing elements of Changing Woodlands as part of this investigation.
